Understanding MCBs, RCCBs and Isolators: Choosing the Right Protection Device


Modern electrical installations rely on several protection and switching devices to ensure safety, reliability and compliance. While Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs), Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCBs) and Isolators are commonly installed together in distribution boards, each performs a different function and is designed for a specific purpose.

Understanding the role of each device helps electricians, contractors and installers select the correct protection solution for every application.

What is a Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB)?

A Miniature Circuit Breaker, commonly known as an MCB, is designed to protect electrical circuits and connected equipment from damage caused by overloads and short circuits.

Inside an MCB are thermal and magnetic tripping mechanisms. The thermal element responds to sustained overload conditions, while the magnetic element reacts almost instantly to high fault currents caused by short circuits. When either condition occurs, the breaker automatically disconnects the circuit to prevent damage to wiring and equipment.

The range is manufactured to IEC60947-2 standards and features a C Curve tripping characteristic, making it suitable for general electrical installations where moderate inrush currents may be present.

Available options include single pole, double pole, triple pole and four pole configurations with a 3kA breaking capacity and current ratings from 6A to 63A.

Typical applications include:

• Single Pole MCBs for lighting circuits, socket outlets and dedicated single phase loads.
• Double Pole MCBs where both live and neutral conductors require protection and disconnection.
• Triple Pole MCBs for three phase motors, pumps and industrial equipment.
• Four Pole MCBs for three phase systems where all three phases and neutral require protection.

Although an MCB can be switched on and off manually, it is not intended to be used as a regular switch. Frequent operation can reduce the life of the mechanism. Devices such as timers, contactors and smart controls are better suited for routine switching applications.

What is an RCCB?

An RCCB, often referred to as an earth leakage device, is designed to protect people from electric shock by detecting current leaking to earth.

Unlike an MCB, an RCCB does not provide overload or short circuit protection. Instead, it continuously monitors the current flowing in the active and neutral conductors. Under normal conditions these currents remain balanced. If a fault occurs and current escapes to earth through damaged insulation, equipment or a person, the RCCB detects the imbalance and disconnects power within milliseconds.

The VE2P63E RCCB range features a 2 Pole design, 63A current rating and 30mA sensitivity. Manufactured to IEC61008-1, SANS556-2-3 and VC8035 standards, it provides effective protection against earth leakage faults while helping reduce the risk of electric shock and electrical fires.

What is an Isolator?

An Isolator is a manually operated switching device used to safely disconnect equipment from the power supply for maintenance and servicing.

Unlike an MCB, an Isolator does not provide overload or short circuit protection. Its purpose is to provide a safe and reliable point of isolation before work is carried out on electrical equipment.

Available in Single Pole, Double Pole, Triple Pole and Four Pole versions with ratings from 32A to 100A, the range is manufactured to IEC60947-3 standards and features DIN rail mounting, contact position indication and top or bottom cable entry for installation flexibility.

Choosing the Correct Device

Each device has a distinct role within an installation.

• MCB – Protects circuits and equipment from overloads and short circuits.
• RCCB – Protects people by detecting earth leakage currents.
• Isolator – Provides safe manual disconnection for maintenance and servicing.
