Understanding Voltage: 24V and 48V Systems

Calculating the Correct Driver Size
Selecting the correct driver wattage is just as important as choosing the correct voltage. The required driver size is calculated based on the power consumption of the LED strip as well as the length required for the application.
To determine the total power requirement, multiply the wattage per meter of the strip by the total length of the installation. The watts per meter equals the driver size.
For example, if an LED strip consumes 14.4 watts per meter and the installation length is 8 meters, the total power requirement would be 115.2 watts.
It is always recommended to add a safety margin of between twenty and thirty percent. This ensures that the driver is not running at full capacity and helps improve reliability and lifespan. In this example the recommended driver size would therefore be approximately 150 watts.
Understanding IP Ratings
Another important consideration when choosing an LED driver is the IP rating. This rating indicates how well the driver is protected against dust and moisture.
IP20 drivers are intended for indoor installations where the driver is protected from environmental exposure. They are commonly used in ceiling spaces, cupboards or indoor lighting applications.
IP65 drivers provide protection against dust and water jets and are suitable for damp environments or outdoor installations where additional protection is required.

Selecting the correct LED driver ensures that the lighting system operates safely and delivers consistent performance over time. By considering the correct voltage, driver wattage and IP rating, installers can create reliable lighting installations that perform exactly as intended.
